5. Additives

I don't use any additives, other than a nightly drip of Kalkwasser (in RO water), a weekly dose of  pH buffer, and a few drops of iodine once per month, if necessary.

6. Water changes

I change about 20 litres (10%) of water every two to three weeks, using mostly natural seawater (I live about 40 kilometres from a reasonably unpolluted beach). If the weather is bad, or if I'm just too lazy to drive to the beach, I use Red Sea salt.

7. Water parameters

During the first 18 months I tested my water every week. Once I became convinced that the system had stabilized, I progressively reduced the testing frequency, and I now only do a full set of tests every 3 months (or when something bothers me…). I also have the water analyzed by an analytical laboratory once every year, just to confirm my colorimetric testing.

The average results for the past year are given below:

SG : 1.023 @ 26°C - 27°C

pH : 8.1 (early morning) - 8.4 (at lights out)

Temp: 25°C - 28 °C

Alk : 2.0 - 3.0 meq/l

NH4 : 0.01 ppm

NO3 : <0.2 ppm

PO4 : 0.01 ppm

Ca : 325 - 375 ppm
